| Introduction | CRW: Almost all of this information comes from my relative and co-researcher EMW. I have, for the most part, collected whatever images I could find on-line to confirm the details. | ||||

| PP_71 | That Mary Smart (71) was the mother of Sarah Jane Carter (35) | ||||
| Sarah Jane Carter, daughter of George Carter, hatter, and Mary was born on 25 April and baptised on 10 June 1798 in St. Saviour, Denmark Park, Southwark. | Birth | 1798 | |||
| She had 6 siblings born between 1793 and 1814, all in Southwark - Mary Ann in 1793. George 1795, Isaace Mills 1801, William 1804, Jemina 1808 and Jane 1814 | Tree | ||||
| Their parents were George Carter and Mary Smart married in 1792 in Newington. | Marriage | ||||
| The marriage entry does not include Mary Smart's name or age, nor the name of her father, so identification of her birth or baptism was not simple - there are at least 4 possible births in London between 1769 and 1772 alone in the IGI (in 1999). I worked on the assumption that his wife was Jane Ayliffe who married in 1772. | |||||
| The next step forward was the discovery in 2003 of the PCC will of Thomas Smart, gentleman, in Bethnal Green in 1829 listing his daughter Mary Carter wife of George Carter in 1820 and 8 other children, and his late wife Jane. | Will 1829 | ||||
| This will names the following children in order: William (b. 1770), Mary 1772, John 1774, Jane 1776, Henry 1785, Ann 1778, Sarah 1782, James 1790, and in trust to John for son Thomas 5 shillings per week. | Tree | ||||
| Mary Carter born Smart of Bethnal Green also left a PCC will, in 1833, which leaves her estate to her 6 children mentioned above. | Will 1833 | ||||
| Thomas Smart's will did not prompt me to eliminate Jane Ayliffe as his wife, though I did see at the time that Thomas was born in 1767 (before the marriage) and that there were 2 other births of a Thomas Smart and Jane, Jane in 1765 and Mary in 1769, who did not figure in the will (died young). | |||||
| It was only 10 years later, on comparing notes with EMW, that she pointed out the marriage between Thomas Smart and Jane Wastell in 1765 in St. Mary Whitechapel, that I finally saw the light… | Marriage | ||||
| That Mary Smart is our ancestor has been confirmed by multiple DNA matches between descendants of her mother Jane Wastell and of descendants of 2 of her mother's brothers - John Wastell b. 1734 and William Wastell b. 1740. We have as yet not found any DNA matches to descendants of Mary Smart herself. | DNA | ||||
