| Introduction | |||||
| Tracing | Tracing the Otters | ||||
| My grandfather Ernest William Watts was born on the 3rd of August 1879 in Kensington. This was the first thing I looked up in 1977. His parents were William John Yallop Watts and Emmeline, formerly Otter. | Births | ||||
| William John Yallop Watts & Emmeline Otter were married on the 14th of September 1878 in Brentford. Emmeline's age is given as 'full'. Her father is given as Charles Otter, farmer. | Marriage | ||||
| It took a fair amount of searching, but by 1980 I did finally find Emmeline Otter's birth in the PRO. She was born on the 30th of July 1857 in Uppingham. Her parents are given as Charles Edward Otter, a carpenter, and Mary Ann, formerly Boon. | Births | ||||
| The marriage of Charles Edward Otter & Mary Ann Boon also took some searching in the PRO, taking place on the 11th of March 1841 in Gretton, Northamptonshire. Charles Edward Otter was a carpenter, 'of full age', and Mary Ann Boon was 18. Their fathers are not given in the marriage certificate. | Marriage | ||||
| In the census of the 7th of June 1841, Charles and Mary Otter are living in Gretton in the household of Ann Boon 65, widow, not born in Northamptonshire, William Boon 70, agricultural labourer, born in the county, and George Boon 6, not born in the county. This could be Mary's mother, uncle, and nephew. | Census | ||||
| Some years later I finally found William J. Watts' family in the 1881 census, and his in-laws were living with his family. Charles Edward Otter is described as 61, born in Uppingham, so probably in 1819, and Mary Ann Boon as 58 and born in Gretton, probably in 1822. | Census | ||||
| A letter to the Northamptonshire record office in 2000 produced the information that Charles Edward Otter was baptized on June 18 1819 in Uppingham, the son of Thomas Otter, a brazier, and Mary. He had siblings William Thomas (26 January 1814), Samuel (12 July 1815), Elizah (11 October 1816), Anna Louisa (29 November 1820), Sophia (3 March 1822), Emma (26 July 1823) and Ellen (25 August 1824). | Births | ||||
| The IGI listed none of these births, but does show a Frances Elizabeth Otter daughter of Thomas and Mary baptized in Stamford in 1810. This would fit into the sequence, and as Emmeline Otter had a sister called Frances Elizabeth in the next generation, it looked as though the trail might lead to Stamford. | |||||
| The next year I was in London at the Society of Genealogists and consulted the Marriage Index of Lincolnshire Vol 17A Stamford Churches 1754-1812 LI/R71, which shows a marriage of Thomas Otter and Mary Rouse in 1808 In St. George’s Stamford. | Marriage | ||||
| A daughter [Mar]y was born to Samuel Rouse and Frances in Stamford in 1785. Among other children, a daughter Frances Elizabeth was born to Samuel Rouse and Frances Elizabeth in 1791. In 1781 Samuel Rouse married Elizabeth Frances Stevenson in Stamford. That Mary Rouse’s mother, daughter and a granddaugher were all named Frances Elizabeth pretty much clinches the assertion that Charles Edward Otter’s parents were the Thomas Otter & Mary Rouse who married in Stamford in 1808. | |||||
| Mary Otter aged 65, born in Stamford, is listed in the 1851 Census living in Uppingham with Robert Hales and his wife Mary Susan. She is the mother-in-law, so mother of Mary Susan who was 38 years old - born in Uppingham – that is, in 1813. Was there a Mary Susan Otter born to Thomas and Mary in 1813?? Mary Otter is listed as ‘married’, so her husband was still alive, but they were not together the night of the census. A Thomas Otter, brazier, aged 56 was listed living among people with various surnames in 1841. (1851?) He may be the Thomas Otter who died in Stamford in 1855. | |||||
| This is as far back as I had traced the Otter family as of the year 2000. | |||||
| Proofs | Proofs | ||||
| PP_9 | That Emmeline Otter (9) was the mother of Ernest William Watts (4) | ||||
| William John Yallop Watts and Emmeline Otter married in 1878. | Marriage | ||||
| William John Yallop Watts and Emmeline had 6 children between 1879 and 1896, Ernest William in 1879, Beatrice Frances Eva Hudson in 1881, Frank Wetheral in 1884, Marian Maud in 1887, Emmeline Adelaide in 1888, and Gladys Winifred in 1896. | Births | ||||
| Emmeline Watts is listed in the 1881 census as aged 23 and born (c. 1858) in Uppingham. | Census | ||||
| Emmeline Watts died in 1921. Her will leaves everything to her husband William John Watts. | Will | ||||
| Emmeline Otter is listed in the 1861 census as aged 3 (c. 1858) and born in Uppingham. | Census | ||||
| A simple search in the birth records at the GRO (now TNA) showed that Emmeline Otter was born on 30 July 1857 in Uppingham, the daughter of Charles Edward Otter and Mary Ann, formerly Boon. | Births | ||||
| My descent from Emmeline Otter is confirmed by at least 4 DNA matches averaging about 80cM with descendants of her sibling Mary Susannah Otter, and at least 13 matches averaging about 53cm of all descendants of Emmeline with all descendants of Mary Susannah. | DNA | ||||
| So the mother of Ernest William Watts (4), | |||||
| Emmeline Otter (9), born in 1857 in Uppingham, | |||||
| married to William John Yallop Watts (8) in 1878 in Acton, | PP_8 | ||||
| died in 1921 in Beckenham, was the daughter of | |||||
| Charles Edward Otter (18), and | PP_18 | ||||
| Mary Ann Boon (19). | PP_19 | ||||
| PP_18 | That Charles Edward Otter (18) was the father of Emmeline Otter (9) | PP_9 | |||
| William John Yallop Watts and Emmeline Otter married in 1878. Her father was given as Charles Otter. Her age was given as 'full'. She was born on 30 July 1857 in Uppingham, the daughter of Charles Edward Otter and Mary Ann, formerly Boon. | |||||
| Charles Edward Otter and Mary Ann Boon were married in 1841 in Gretton, Northamptonshire. His age was give as 'full', and hers as 18. Their fathers' names were not given. | Marriage | ||||
| In the 1841 census, Charles Otter, a carpenter, aged 20 (born c. 1821) and Mary Otter aged 19 (born c. 1822) are living in Gretton in the houshold of Ann Boon aged 65, widow, not born in Northamptonshire. | Census | ||||
| In the 1851 census, Charles Edward Otter, a carpenter, is 31 (born c. 1820 in Uppingham), Mary A. Otter his wife, a dyer, is 28, and daughter Ann, 7, Mary Susan, 6, Frances Elizabeth, 3, and Elizabeth, 1, are living in Uppinham | Census | ||||
| In the 1861 census, Charles Edward Otter, a carpenter, is 41 (born c. 1820 in Uppingham), Mary A. Otter his wife, a char woman, is 38, and children Elizabeth, 10, Samuel, 8, Catherine, 6, Emmeline, 3, and Ellen, 1, are living in Uppinham | Census | ||||
| In the 1881 census they are living with William J. Watts and their daughter Emmeline. Charles Edward Otter is described as 61 (born c. 1820 in Uppingham), and Mary Ann Boon, 58, born in Gretton, so probably born in 1822. | Census | ||||
| In the 1891 census they are still living with William J. Watts and their daughter Emmeline. Charles Edward Otter is described as 71 (born c. 1820 in Uppingham), and Mary Ann Boon, 68, born in Gretton, so probably born in 1822. | Census | ||||
| Charles Edward Otter, a retired farmer, died on 19 November 1893 in Lambeth aged 74 (born c. 1819). | Death | ||||
| A letter to the Northamptonshire record office in 2000 produced the information that Charles Edward Otter was baptized on June 18 1819 in Uppingham, the son of Thomas Otter, a brazier, and Mary. | Births | ||||
| My descent from Charles Edward Otter is confirmed by at least 3 DNA matches averaging about 17cM with descendants of his sibling William Thomas Otter, and at least 14 matches averaging about 18cm of all descendants of Charles Edward with all descendants of William Thomas. | DNA | ||||
| So the father of Emmeline Otter (9), | |||||
| Charles Edward Otter (18), born in 1819 in Uppingham, | |||||
| married to Mary Ann Boon (19) in 1841 in Gretton, | PP_19 | ||||
| died in 1893 in Lambeth, was the son of | |||||
| Thomas Otter (36), and | PP_36 | ||||
| Mary Rouse (37). | PP_37 | ||||
| PP_36 | That Thomas Otter (36) was the father of Charles Edward Otter (18) | PP_18 | |||

| The Lincolnshire RO website Lincs-to-the-Past shows a Thomas Otter buried in Stamford on 12 April 1855. | Death | ||||
| The Lincolnshire Chronicle reported that Thomas Otter, formerly a brazier, aged 72 had died at the Union Workhouse on 10 April 1855. He was probably born c. 1783. | Death | ||||
| Thomas son of Richard Otter and Susannah was baptised on 6 October 1786 in Stamford. | Births | ||||
| My descent from Thomas Otter (effectively an only child, it seems) is confirmed by his grandfather Richard Otter's DNA matches. | DNA | ||||
| So the father of Charles Edward Otter (18), | |||||
| Thomas Otter (36), born in 1786 in Stamford, | |||||
| married to Mary Rouse (37) in 1808 in Stamford, | PP_37 | ||||
| died in 1855 in Stamford workhouse, was the son of | |||||
| Richard Otter (72), and | PP_72 | ||||
| Susannah Earl (73). | PP_73 | ||||
| PP_72 | That Richard Otter (72) was the father of Thomas Otter (36) | PP_36 | |||
| Thomas son of Richard Otter and Susannah was baptised on 6 October 1786 in Stamford. | Birth | ||||
| Thomas Otter was the 3rd of 5 children, Thomas born 1784 (died 1784), Richard 1785 (died 1786), Ann 1788 (died 1790), and Ann 1791 (fate unknown), and may have been the only one to have descendants alive today. | |||||
| His parents were no doubt the Richard Otter, whitesmith, and Susannah Earl who married in Stamford in 1783. | Marriage | ||||
| Richard Otter died in Stamford in 1813 aged 61. | Death | ||||
| Widow' Otter, no doubt Susannah, died in Stamford in 1814 aged 60. | Death | ||||
| Richard Otter is no doubt the one born in St. Michael Stamford in 1755, the son of Richard and Ann Otter. | Birth | ||||
| Richard Otter of Casewick in the parish of Uffington and Ann Baines of St. Georges Stamford married in Stamford a year before in 1754. | Marriage | ||||
| My descent from Thomas Otter (effectively an only child, it seems) is confirmed by his father Richard Otter's DNA matches. | DNA | ||||
| So the father of Thomas Otter (36), | |||||
| Richard Otter (72), born in 1755 in Stamford, | |||||
| married to Susannah Earl (73) in 1783 in Stamford, | |||||
| died in 1813 in Stamford, was the son of | |||||
| Richard Otter (144), and | |||||
| Ann Baines (145). | PP_145 | ||||
| PP_144 | That Richard Otter (144) was the father of Richard Otter (72) | ||||
| Casewick is just about a mile away from Tallington as the crow flies, so the most likely birth for our Richard Otter seemed to be that in 1722 in Tallington, the son of William and Sarah Otter. | Birth | ||||
| Without wills, this line of Thomas Otter b. 1786, Richard Otter b. 1755 and Richard Otter b. 1722 in Tallington would have remained conjecture - until DNA came along… | |||||
| So it was that one day in 2021 I searched on Ancestry for any of my matches with 'Otter' in their tree, and noticed that a certain Graeme Cooper had an Otter line in Tallington. This led to finding many other descendants of Joseph Otter and Elizabeth Baines who married in Tallington in 1794. | |||||
| This Joseph Otter died in 1840 in Tallington aged 77 (born 1763). | OBT | ||||
| Joseph Otter was baptized on 20 November 1763 in Tallington, the son of Francis Otter and Mary. | |||||
| Francis Otter and his wife Mary had 9 children in Tallington between 1761 and 1774, and their marriage was certainly that between Francis Otter and Mary Podeham in Tallington in 1761. | |||||
| This Francis Otter, born sometime before 1740, say, has at least 21 descendants who have taken DNA tests, and they have at least 11 DNA matches that I can detect, averaging 15cM, between them and the descendants of Richard Otter born 1822 in Tallington. I personally have 4 matches to Francis' descendants, averaging 9.5cM. | DNA | ||||
| This must mean, in my opinion, that Francis and Richard Otter are brothers, and both their direct lines are confirmed by these DNA matches. | |||||
| Francis' baptism record is missing, but so are ALL baptism records for 7 whole years for Tallington between 1720 and 1740 (in the bishop's transcripts). | |||||
| Note that Richard Otter's mother was Sarah Taverner, no doubt the Sarah born to Francis Taverner in Braceborough in 1688, so our Francis Otter would have been named after his maternal grandfather. | |||||
| So the father of Richard Otter (72), | |||||
| Richard Otter (144), born in 1722 in Tallington, | |||||
| married to Ann Baines (145) in 1754 in Stamford, | |||||
| died in 1785 in Stamford, was the son of | |||||
| William Otter (288), and | |||||
| Sarah Taverner (289). | |||||
| PP_288 | That William Otter (288) was the father of Richard Otter (144) | ||||
| Richard Otter was born in 1722 in Tallington, the son of William and Sarah Otter. | Birth | ||||
| William and Sarah Otter had 4 children we know of (beside Francis - see above) Joseph 1720, Richard 1722, Jane (died 1722) and Thomas 1727 (died 1722). | Tree | ||||
| William Otter married Sarah Taverner in 1717 in Tallington as his second wife. | Marriage | ||||
| William Otter and his first wife Mary had a son William baptized in 1716. | |||||
| William Otter married Mary Fryer in 1714 in Tallington. | Marriage | ||||
| William Otter was born in Tallington in 1689, the son of William Otter and Jane. | Birth | ||||
| William Otter 's parents are no doubt the William Otter and Jane Dalby who married in Tallington in 1685. | Marriage | ||||
| William Otter's mother died in 1704, and his father married Alice Henson in the next year. | |||||
| It is this Alice Otter who left a will in 1722 leaving small sums of money to her late husband William Otter's sons Thomas, William, Richard and Joseph - confirming our Richard's descent. | Will | ||||
| So the father of Richard Otter (144), | |||||
| William Otter (288), born in 1689 in Tallington, | |||||
| married to Sarah Taverner (289) in 1717 in Tallington, | |||||
