| Introduction | I have made no progress on the Atkinsons beyond the marriage of Mary Ann Atkinson and George Little in 1857. | ||||
| She gives her age as 26, but in the next 4 census returns (below - which I think pertain to them due to their children Martha and William J. in 1861 and 1871, William, George and Joseph in 1871 and 1881, and Joseph and John in 1881 and 1891) she is aged 27 in 1861, 40 in 1871, 47 in 1881, and 57 in 1891. Disregarding 1871, she was probably actually born on 1833 or 1834, so was 23 on her marriage. | |||||
| Her birthplace is once given (by whom?) as Longtown (and her name as Margaret), and once as Penrith. | |||||
| Her father is given as George, deceased, but the only George Atkinson, miller I've found (1851 census) has a wife too young to be Mary Ann's mother, and he was not deceased in 1857. | |||||
| I get the impression that she was illegitimate, and gave misleading information to disguise the fact - age on marriage slightly off, father 'George' deceased to explain his absence, and perhaps misleading place of birth in 1861. | |||||
