| The Overview to the right shows a summary of my autosomal DNA results. | Overview | ||||
| Confirmed ancestors are marked with solid red dots. | |||||
| 'Confirmed' means that this ancestor had at least one sibling with one or more descendants who have taken a DNA test, and that there are at least two matches between descendants of this ancestor's descendants and the siblings' descendants, OR at least one of this ancestor's parents is confirmed, meaning that this ancestor is also thereby confirmed. For an axample of this latter case - both of my parents lack either a sibling or a sibling with a descendant having taken a DNA test, but both are confirmed by both of their parents respectively. | |||||
| That is enough to get an overview, and should be enough for most people. | |||||
| For those who are interested in more detail … - associated with each dot are up to 6 numbers: | |||||
| 1 + 2: The first two red numbers give the total number of matches between descendants of this ancestor's descendants and any siblings' descendants, and the average strength of those matches in centimorgans (cM) | |||||
| 3: The third red number shows how many matches I (or my brother) have to any of the known descendants of this ancestor's siblings. In some cases this is zero - so then I am relying of my proven cousins' matches rather than my own, for the proof. | |||||
| 4: The fourth red number shows the total number of known descendants of this ancestor's siblings who have taken a DNA test and who can reliably be assigned to a siblings' branch, deduced on Ancestry using 'Common Ancestors' and ThruLines, 'Shared Matches' (Pro), sharing DNA results with others, and consulting generally available family trees. | |||||
| 5: The first black number is the SUM of the number of matches (#1) for this ancestor, and of all of his or her ancestors in all male and female lines. | |||||
| 6: The second black number is the SUM of the number of identified descendants of siblings (#4) for this ancestor, and of all of his or her ancestors in all male and female lines. | |||||
| The black numbers give an idea of how many matches and cousins in siblings' branches lie behind the confirmation of any particular ancestor in this chart. | |||||
| Note that, for instance, as shown in the Overview, I have identified 10 Watts 2nd cousins (0, 1 or 2x removed), descendants of my grandfather Ernest William Watts' younger brother, and these have contributed to the 37 matches found between these Watts cousins and 19 descendants of Edward Mardon Hawkins (EMH) - confirming my great-grandfather William John Yallop Watts (under the assumption that he was a natural son of said EMH). And in turn, these 19 descendants of EMH have contributed along with the Watts cousins to the 26 matches to 14 descendants of EMH's sister Sarah. And these 14 descendants of EMH's sister have contributed along with the Watts and Hawkins cousins to the 8 matches to 3 descendants of Thomas Hawkins' sister Mary. And so on... | |||||
| Where an ancestor is only confirmed by matches to descendants of one of his or her ancestors, this is indicated with an 'up' arrow. | |||||
| Where an ancestor seems to have no siblings who left descendants, or only descendants who have not taken a DNA test, this is indicated with a red dash. | |||||
| The larger the number of matches, the more likely the 'confirmation' of an ancestor is correct (assuming that the trees used are correct). | |||||
| Note that this is a work in progress, and the figures change from day to day… | |||||
| Note that ancestors who are confirmed by DNA are marked with a '✓' sign in the 'Proofs' column on the Main page. | |||||
| Results | My father is confirmed by at least 465 matches over 343 cousins (all those on the left half of the diagram), and my mother by 452 matches among 305 cousins - all those on the right half of the diagram. | ||||
| My grandparents are confirmed by 386, 79, 133 and 319 matches among 283, 60, 63 and 242 cousins respectively. | |||||
| My great-grandparents (apart from William John Yallop Watts (WJYW) are confirmed by 110, 38, 34, 25, 106, 145 and 170 matches among 94, 17, 38, 9, 53, 125 and 115 cousins respectively. | |||||
| So far, so good - but WJYW was born and baptized as the son of James Pell Yallop, jun. 1824-1896, and his ancestors the Yallops, Packers, Pells and Norris seem to have left no trace at all (count of 0/0), whereas his wife Jemima Caroline Hudson is confirmed by 91 matches among 57 cousins. | |||||
| Of my other great-great-grandparents, all are confirmed by at least one match except Mary Ann Atkinson (see the Atkinsons - they have proved impossible to trace so far), and Louisa Jones below. | |||||
| My great-great grandmother Louisa Jones was born around 1835 in Ireland (co. Mayo in 1881 census), but by 1851 in Liverpool, and stated on her marriage in 1855 that her father was Anthony Jones, a farmer (probably from Toomore/Foxford County Mayo, according to Griffith's Valuation of 1855). She is 'confirmed' by 11 matches among 14 Noone descendants (especially), but also 12 matches among 14 Quinn descendants from that area (but not Jones), so her real parentage is a mystery - and may remain so due to missing records. | |||||
| Some fairly distant ancestors are confirmed by DNA: | |||||
| George Hudson 1764-1816 by at least 13 matches among 25 descendants of his two wives, confirming him, as the common denominator. | |||||
| Catherine Nevill 1768-1796 by at least 11 matches among 13 descendants of her sister Margaret Elizabeth Yarroll born Nevill. | |||||
| Richard Otter 1722-1785 by 13 matches among 21 descendants of his brother Francis Otter (c1730-after 1792). | |||||
| John Stevenson 1732-1777 by 6 matches among 32 descendants of his sister Naomi (1734-after 1807). | |||||
| Alice Clipsham 1710-1780 by 21 matches among 8 descendants of her two husbands. | |||||
| Ann Boothby 1727-1802, tentatively, by 4 matches to 1 descendant of her uncle Charles Boothby 1706-1790. | |||||
| Possibly Mary Bell 1758- by 3 matches among 2 descendants of her sister Ann Bell 1769-1814 who married John Knight. | |||||
| Mary Ramsey 1769-, tentatively, by 7 matches to descendants of our ancestor Mary Ann Darke by 1 descendant of her half-siblings. | |||||
